Pets can bring comfort when depression, anxiety, or grief makes life feel especially lonely. I know because my cat Tabitha stayed close to me during one of the hardest seasons of my life, and I have never forgotten what that meant.
During a difficult season, Tabitha and I were adjusting to a new chapter in life. I was feeling especially alone, and her quiet companionship meant more than I can explain.
One day, while I was resting, Tabitha climbed onto me and settled in. Her warmth and the simple fact that she was there touched me deeply. In that moment, I felt cared for. After that, we were a team.
Tabitha was my constant companion. She welcomed the people and animals who became part of our life. As she grew older, travel became harder for her, but she stayed close to me for eighteen years.
In time, Tabitha’s health declined. We focused on keeping her comfortable and stayed by her side until it was time to say goodbye.
The final season of her life remains especially precious to me. We shared a quiet closeness that is hard to describe, and I will always be grateful for the time we had together.
People sometimes put a bumper sticker on their car that asks, “Who rescued who?” For me, the answer is easy. Tabitha rescued me. She could not take away the hard things I was facing, but her presence helped me feel less alone. Sometimes a pet offers comfort simply by staying beside us.
I know cats are not for everyone. Some people feel most at home with dogs, and others connect with different animals. What matters is the loving bond we share. We care for them, and in their own ways, they let us know they care for us, too.
I have loved other cats since Tabitha. Each one is special, and I feel lucky to share my home with them. I do not think there will ever be another Tabitha, but I carry my love for her with me.
I will always love Tabitha. The comfort she gave me and the bond we shared remain close to my heart.
